History of Towson Avenue in Fort Smith, Arkansas

Towson Avenue Fort Smith Arkansas

Anyone who has spent much time at all in the Fort Smith, Arkansas area knows that there is a lot of history. One of the most well known historical sites is Judge Parker's hanging gallows. However, there is also a rich history of the Civil War as well.

In the summer of 1864, Fort Smith, Arkansas was a critical geographic region where the Confederate troops met the Union soldiers. There was a big decision that had to be made...The Confederate General Douglas Cooper could storm the fortifications of Fort Smith or he could attempt a powerful demonstration against them. However, there was a major dilemma for soldiers and civilians at this time - a shortage of supplies and food.  General Cooper decided to he hoped to attract isolated Federal units outside the town's defenses, to gather horses and beef cattle being grazed on the prairies around Fort Smith, and to create a defense behind which pro-Confederate families in the area could vacate the region.

General Darby Cooper Fort Smith Arkansas

In order to successfully carryout this defensive plan, four other parties were involved and posted up for support.  Defense one was located where what we call today, Fianna Hills. Defense two was located with their back up against the Poteau River. These two parties combined, would be able to create a distraction These men would be able to create a distraction by firing into the main garrison. Cooper would then move the main body of his military forward in two columns up what we call Towson Avenue (formerly called Fort Towson).

With the help of Brigadier General Stand Watie (the only Native American to claim the rank of general in the service of the Confederacy), when nightfall came,, all forces were put in place by July 30, 1864. With daybreak the next morning, the Battle of Fort Smith began.

General Watie, meanwhile led his columns forward through the parallel down Fort Towson
and State Line roads, taking over a Union outpost several miles outside of town and driving up quickly to within view of the earthworks of Battery or Fort Number Four. This fort stood between what we now know as Towson and Wheeler Avenues along Dodson Avenue.

Brigadier General Stand Watie

It wasn't long before the Union began to fight back. Marching forward they created a line of
battle between Towson and Wheeler Avenues and formed up a battery of more substantial
artillery that quickly suppressed the fire of Cooper's guns.

This exactly what Cooper wanted...and he got it. Now that the Union fell for his plan, Cooper ordered his men to disengage.  They did so casually, leaving Native American snipers hidden in the brush to engage any Union troops audacious enough to move forward from their battle line. The tactic worked and the Confederates easily ended their attack and withdrew from the battlefield but not without taking $130,000 worth of Union arms and supplies.

Originally serving as the residence for William Henry Harrison Clayton and his family, the Clayton House has also been home to several paranormal experiences. Director Martha Siler and her employees steer clear of a bedroom on the second floor, where the sounds of boots stomping and doors slamming have been heard. In Clayton’s study, Siler and her daughter have both seen an apparition of a woman with gray hair dressed in brown. A carpenter took some pictures while working on the house and when he got them back, a woman appeared. Paranormal investigators have captured several recordings in the house, including one of a cat meowing and of a man yelling an obscenity. When the public was invited on these investigations, a woman reported her hair being tugged and a man saw a person’s face. For more information, contact The Clayton House at 479-783-3000 or visit

Halloween Recipes

Halloween Greek Yogurt Fruit Dip & Spooky Fruit Snacks

by Kitchen Fun with My Three Sons

1 Large Container Greek Yogurt (unsweetened)
1/4 Cup of Nutella
2 Clementines
Pretzel Sticks
3 Bananas
1 Red Apple
Green Grapes
Mini & Mallobits Marshmallows
Peanut Butter
Black Edible Marker

To make the Spider Web Greek Yogurt Dip you want to scoop out the yogurt into a bowl reserving about 1/2 cup. Mix the 1/4 of Nutella with the yogurt. Spoon the reserved yogurt in a baggie then snip off the corner. Squeeze on a web on the top. We made the spider using raisins, but you could also do this with dark grapes as well….

To make the BOOnanas you want to peel then cut in half. Use raisins for the eyes & mouth attaching with peanut butter…so so easy!

To make the Monster Eye Balls you want to cut the grapes in half. Cut the mini marshmallows in half as well. Press the black edible marker in the middle of the marshmallow then place them on top of the grapes (they will stick)…

To make the Orange Pumpkins you want to cut a couple of clementines in half then press a piece of a pretzel stick in the top….

See how such simple fun food creations can be so cute!

You can see more of her fun Halloween Recipes here.

Little Frankies

by Growing UP Greens

To make them all you need is one jumbo size marshmallow for each Frankie, Green Grapes, a clear plastic cup (and lid or you can use press and seal paper instead) and a sharpie marker.

  • Fill the cup half way up with grapes
  • Cut marshmallow almost in half, open it up and stick it to the sides of the cup
    • The Marshmallow will be nice and sticky.
  • Add more grapes, lid up
  • Use your sharpie to draw eyeballs and funny or scary faces on the outside of the cup

Easy peasy!

They’re a perfect Halloween party snack, so make some for your kids this Halloween, trust me they’ll love them

***If serving to young kids, yes you should cut the grapes first, use your instincts**

The Unexpected Project - Murals Downtown Fort Smith with Map

At some point, traditional art became lost. It was replaced with TV, Video Games, Facebook and other forms of digital visualization. The Unexpected Project came changed everything for Fort Smith, Arkansas. Suddenly people began talking about art on this building, art on that building, art everywhere. My mom even called me on phone while shopping at the Fort Smith Farmer's Market and I could hear the amusement in her voice as she told me about "all these artists painting things on buildings."

The Unexpected Project brought the dead back to life. It revitalized the greater downtown area of Fort smith.  It is something that people in our town are proud of "owning." When visitors come from out of town, one of the things to show them in the area as part of the "tour" is taking them to see the murals.

"The completed murals includes world recognized artists Vhills, D*Face, Roa, Maser, Ana Maria, Bicicleta Sem Freio, Askew and the UAFS students. During a week, the artists painted 12 new murals which rejuvenated the historic and beautiful buildings from downtown Fort Smith and also awakened the town that didn't received so many people in its streets since a decade. Fort Smith was a former real western town at a border of the lawless Indian territory and has a rich history of legendary heroes and outlaws. From highly colorful pieces by Bicicleta Sem Freio, western-inspired artworks from D*Face ora  majestic carved portrait of a Native American by Vhils, the festival was critically acclaimed by the local residents which fully embraced the event. After a week of painting, the face of Fort Smith has drastically been changed by Unexpected and the happy residents will now be living with their new history." -Justkids Vimeo Video.

The first session was completed in the summer of 2015, but stay tuned because September 2-11 of 2016 will provide ten new murals with returning artists: D*Face and Maser. New artists for the 2016 projects will include: Northiside and Southside High School Students, new UAFS students, Guido Van Helten, Bordalo II, Jaz/Pastel, Cyrcle, Okuda San Miguel and Faith 47.

Whether you are a Fort Smith native or are a visitor coming to explore, we encourage you to check out all the murals. We have created a map of the murals to help you easily find them all!

Rooster's Fort Smith - A Fort Smith Beer You Probably Never Heard About

Rooster's Fort Smith Beer. A play on of Rooster Cogburn in the movie True Grit based in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  It's also a brew you have likely never heard about. Rooster's Brewing Company is based in the United Kingdom.

Rooster's Fort Smith brew is an APA (American Pale Ale). According to BeerAdvocate, Fort Smith is a big and bold India Pale Ale, brewed using Citra and Chinook hops from the USA to create tropical and passion fruit aromas and a lasting, bitter finish. It's available year-round at 5% ABV (alcohol by volume).

Can. Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is tropical fruits, some wood and mild bready malts to it. Flavour is tropical fruits, some nectar and mild floral notes. Also a bit of sweet malts.

Can from haymarket bar. Pours slightly hazy gold with a long-lived white head. Floral nose, pine. Grapefruit on palate.
— user

We have never seen the ale anywhere in town. In fact, we discovered this beer while browsing Instagram. We have never tried purchasing Fort Smith online, but if it something you have any interest in, here are some of the links we found that offer it.

You can also try contacting Rooster's Brewing Company personally if you wish. HELLO@ROOSTERS.CO.UK

According to Rooster's website, "

A brief summary since 1993

Hatched in 1993, at a time when most ales on the market were brown, Rooster’s Brewing Co. fast developed a reputation for brewing ground-breaking, hop-forward pale ales that showcase exciting new hops from the USA.

Fast forward over twenty years and we’re still crazy about hops and the flavours they impart on beer – our hop store is crammed full of varieties from all over the world; from Australia and New Zealand to Slovenia and North America. But that’s not to say we don’t enjoy playing around with other flavours and styles of beer along the way.

Beers such as Yankee® soon started to attract the attention of judges at beer festivals across the UK, racking up countless awards along the way. One of the original, new-style, pale ales to be brewed in the UK, Yankee® is now a modern classic.

Over the years the awards have kept coming, but on a slightly larger scale, with YPA® picking up back to back gold medals at the prestigious World Beer Cup in recent times, whilst Baby-Faced Assassin also won a medal at the 2015 International Beer Awards."
